The Formulation Stability Trap

Alpha Arbutin is very sensitive to pH. If your formula drops below pH 3.5, the glycosidic bond breaks. You are now essentially formulating with hydroquinone. This is illegal in many markets and dangerous for the consumer.

I always recommend maintaining a final formula pH between 5.0 and 6.5. This is the “sweet spot” where the molecule remains intact, stable, and highly active.

Do you want to maximize penetration? Do not just rely on the active. Pair it with penetration enhancers like ethoxydiglycol or propanediol. These solvents help the Alpha Arbutin cross the stratum corneum to reach the melanocytes where pigment is actually produced.

  2. Chelating Agents: Always add a chelating agent like Disodium EDTA. Trace metal ions in your water can act as catalysts that trigger oxidation and degradation of the active.
  3. Antioxidant Support: While Alpha Arbutin is relatively stable, adding 0.1% Vitamin E or a similar antioxidant to the oil phase provides an extra layer of protection for the entire emulsion system.
